Egyptians Slaughtering Pigs for No Reason

Egypt is ordering hundreds of thousands of pigs slaughtered.

Apparently the health authorities in Egypt missed the fact that swine flu is spreading from person to person, and that the people contracting it have not had any contact with pigs. And why would pigs half a world away from the outbreak be infected?

This will only hurt the poor farmers there, who are told they can sell the meat so they deserve no compensation from the government. I wonder what slaughtering 300,000 pigs all at once will do to the price of pork when the market is flooded there? It doesn't take an economist to figure that one out.

  1. And here I thought Egypt had moved out of the stone age. I guess I was wrong, either that or they have a bunch of idiots in charge.

I wonder how much this has to do with religion.

  2. Probably a lot. The majority of Egyptians are Muslim, and they apparently hate pigs. Go figure.

  3. One of the things about living in a theocratic or theocratic-type state (as we did under Bush/Cheney)is you don't have to worry about facts. If you think a pig is a pig and thus infected with swine flu, you kill it.

Or, if you don't want a pig to have swine flu, you pronounce that God said pigs no have swine flu.

Then you eat and get sick and die and praise God for his great mercies that allowed you to test the limits of illness and enter paradise with swine flu but a clean heart.

  4. I think this is pandering to Muslim religious extremists, a similar strategy to Bush enforcing the gag rule in order to pander to the Christian Taliban.
